From 16th to 19th November, two of Mount’s Bay W.I. – Liz Anderson and Jenny Fitton – joined over fifty other members from the Cornwall Federation at the W.I.’s own residential college, Denman, near Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Leaving Wherrytown at 7.00 a.m., we arrived at Denman just after 3.00 p.m. and, after settling into our rooms, got our first taste of afternoon tea and biscuits before the welcome meeting and dinner.
For several days, we were immersed in learning new skills ranging from willow weaving, stitching and embroidering Christmas decorations, and French cookery to gospel singing – in groups augmented by a handful of students from other parts of the country.
Despite the dreadful weather, Denman provided a warm and welcoming environment – not to mention excellent food and a cheerful lounge bar! Everyone made the long journey home on Thursday having achieved something of note, made new friends and having had a thoroughly enjoyable few days.
