Old Penzance

At our November meeting, we were delighted to welcome a new member, Ros Blewett, and two guests. They joined us in an evening of reminiscence, as speaker John Wallis treated us to scenes of old Penzance from Penlee House Gallery & Museum’s extensive collection of magic lantern slides.

John has led a dedicated team of volunteers who have been working hard to catalogue the hundreds of slides in the collection and to identify, wherever possible, the locations, people and events depicted.

As the (metaphorical) curtain rose, we were introduced to characters long gone – the rag-and-bone men, tradesmen, town dignitaries and local belles – and marvelled at views of a Promenade or Market Jew Street devoid of traffic, while John’s entertaining narrative provided a clear and authoritative guide along the way.  A fascinating wander through the past.
